The most useful thing in NVIDIA's latest GeForce Game Ready Driver isn't a frame-rate number. It's a wait you no longer sit through. Driver 621.01 WHQL adds support for Microsoft's Advanced Shader Delivery in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Gears of War: E-Day, which lets players skip the shader compilation screen that greets them after every install or patch.
NVIDIA timed the release for a crowded two weeks. Modern Warfare 4 goes fully live on October 23 after its campaign and DMZ early access periods. Phantom Blade Zero follows on October 28 and Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown lands on October 29, both with the full DLSS 4.5 suite.
Why shader compilation takes so long in the first place
Modern games ship tens of thousands of shaders, the small programs that tell your GPU how to draw lighting, materials and effects. They arrive in a generic form and have to be compiled on your own PC for your specific GPU and driver version. NVIDIA says that CPU-heavy step can make players wait up to 30 minutes when a game launches or updates.
Developers can't simply precompile everything for you, because covering every hardware and driver combination would mean downloads measured in terabytes. So local compilation stayed the norm, along with the stutter you get when a game compiles a shader it missed mid-match.
How Advanced Shader Delivery gets around it
Microsoft's approach moves the work to its cloud. Developers using DirectX 12, Windows 11 and the Microsoft Agility SDK capture their shaders into a database. Microsoft then precompiles them for hundreds of thousands of hardware and driver combinations, and the Xbox PC app bundles the exact set your rig needs with the game download.
NVIDIA says the result is close to a 100% cache hit rate. That should remove the compile screen and the just-in-time compilation behind mid-game CPU spikes and frame stutters. There's a detail worth reading twice. NVIDIA's description ties the experience to supported games bought from the Microsoft Store, with the shader set delivered through the Xbox PC app. It doesn't say whether copies bought on other storefronts get the same treatment.
DLSS 4.5 lands on two more launches
The rest of the driver is classic Game Ready material. Phantom Blade Zero, S-GAME's wuxia action game about a swordsman framed for his master's murder, launches with DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation. Its PC-exclusive path-traced lighting also gets cleaned up by DLSS Ray Reconstruction.
In Modern Warfare 4, DLSS Super Resolution works across all modes. RTX 40 Series owners get Frame Generation, RTX 50 Series owners can turn on Dynamic Multi Frame Generation at up to 6X, and NVIDIA Reflex is available on every GeForce RTX card.
A faster DLSS 5 model in NBA 2K27
NBA 2K27, where DLSS 5 debuted last month, picked up a more performant version of that model in its Season 2 update. NVIDIA says it raises frame rates by up to 1.4X on RTX 50 Series GPUs, RTX Spark laptops and GeForce NOW. The company also says the model is now 10X faster overall than the one it showed in March.
Smaller items in the same drop
- Planet Zoo 2 added DLSS 4.5 with Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and Super Resolution in a post-launch update.
- THE FINALS got its PRIME TIME update, with RTXGI ray-traced global illumination on GeForce RTX and RTX Spark hardware. Its existing DLSS integrations can be upgraded to the latest models through the NVIDIA app.
- NVIDIA spotlighted Left 4 Dead RTX, an in-development RTX Remix mod by NoMercyStudios that uses RTX Neural Radiance Cache, Ray Reconstruction and Multi Frame Generation.
Driver 621.01 is available now through the NVIDIA app or from NVIDIA's drivers page.
