Sekiro: No Defeat now has an actual date. Crunchyroll says the anime adaptation of FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will begin streaming weekly as an eight-episode series starting January 2027, worldwide except in Japan, China, Korea, Russia and Belarus.
The series version is not just a rerun of the film that has been playing in Japanese theaters. Crunchyroll is billing it as an expanded cut, with additional content beyond what theatrical audiences have already seen. That is a meaningful distinction for anyone who caught the movie at Annecy's Midnight Specials program or its North American premiere at Fantasia and assumed they had already seen the whole story.
The adaptation comes from KADOKAWA, Qzil.la and ARCH, the same team behind the theatrical cut, whose Japanese run was extended past its original three-week window due to demand. Director Kenichi Kutsuna returns alongside screenwriter Takuya Satou, character designer Takahiro Kishida and composer Shuta Hasunuma. Daisuke Namikawa voices Wolf, Miyuki Satou voices Kuro, and Kenjiro Tsuda plays Genichiro Ashina, the same principal cast attached to the film.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has sold more than 10 million copies since FromSoftware and Activision released it, which is the real reason this adaptation exists at all. Turning a FromSoftware game into hand-drawn animation is a harder sell than adapting most licensed IP, since the games built their reputation on brutal, precise combat rather than story beats that translate easily to a season of television. An eight-episode series gives the adaptation more room to prove that reputation can survive the format change than a two-hour film ever could.
It also follows an awkward rollout. ARCH, the production company behind the adaptation, publicly apologized after announcing the theatrical film without disclosing that a TV series was coming alongside it, leaving early audiences with an incomplete picture of what they were actually getting. A confirmed January 2027 date and an eight-episode count finally give fans the full shape of the release Crunchyroll is asking them to wait for.
