Battlegrounds Season 14 is live, and its headline feature isn't new to Hearthstone. Dark Gifts have existed in the core card game for a while. What's new is Blizzard porting the concept into Battlegrounds and rebuilding it around the mode's economy instead of just reusing the name on new cards.

Starting turn 3, players can spend 3 gold to use the Dark Gift button and Discover a minion paired with a Dark Gift, a buff with a real cost attached. The button can be used once per turn, up to three times a game, and the minions and gifts on offer get more powerful the longer a player waits. That turns a familiar system into a genuine strategic decision unique to Battlegrounds' gold-and-turns structure, rather than a reused flavor text.

A second new keyword joins the mix

Season 14, subtitled "Dark Gifts of Dalaran," also introduces Activate, a keyword that lets certain minions trigger an ability during the Recruit Phase by spending gold, once per turn. Combined with Dark Gifts, it gives players two more gold sinks to manage on top of buying, selling, and rerolling, adding a layer of resource tension Battlegrounds hasn't had before.

Blizzard is pairing the mechanical additions with new heroes, including Nightmare Lord Xavius and Tras'tath, Soul Parasite, plus a refreshed minion pool with more than 60 new minions. Two new type-specific synergies debut alongside them: Lockbox, which lets Pirates uncover a Golden minion locked up until a later turn, and Fishbait, which lets Beasts attack during the Recruit Phase for the first time.

What resets and what carries over

Season 13 ended and ratings reset with the new season, standard practice for Battlegrounds. Any Season 13 Rewards Track progress not yet claimed gets auto-completed, so nothing is lost in the transition. The Battlegrounds Track itself refreshes too, with new cosmetics tied to Season 14 including Maiev and Vanessa VanCleef skins, unlocked through free and paid Season Pass tracks.
