Call of Duty's pre-launch marketing for Modern Warfare 4 has turned to one of football's oldest grudges. Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and Manchester rapper Aitch face off in a head-to-head showdown, released a day before the game's October 23 worldwide launch, that drags the city's red-versus-blue divide onto the sofa.

The video is the latest entry in what Activision calls the Month of Grudge Matches, a series that pits rivals from sport, entertainment and culture against each other in the new game. Haaland plays for one side of the derby and Aitch supports the other, so the framing writes itself.

Three rounds, from the firing range to Gunfight

The challenge runs in stages. Both start in the Gunsmith and Firing Range, trying out weapons and comparing notes on what might give them an edge. That's a sensible warm-up for two people better known for goals and bars than for loadouts.

Next comes the Mobility Course, a timed movement run where speed, control and decision-making decide who posts the better time. The finale is a best-of-five Gunfight across several Modern Warfare 4 maps, with changing loadouts forcing both players to adapt. The winner takes the title of King of Manchester and Modern Warfare 4 champion.

The press release doesn't say who won, which is the point. You'll have to watch the full showdown, which is up now on Haaland's, Aitch's and Call of Duty's YouTube channels.

What it's actually promoting

Strip away the celebrity angle and the clip is a guided tour of features new players will touch first: Gunsmith customization, the movement system and the Gunfight mode. It's a smart way to show mechanics to a football audience that might not watch a standard gameplay trailer.

Modern Warfare 4's Campaign and DMZ Early Access are available now. The full game launches on October 23 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, adding multiplayer to the package.
