Blizzard has revealed the Legacy Match lineup for the BlizzCon 2026 Classic Cup, with four confirmed showmatches across StarCraft: Remastered, StarCraft II, Heroes of the Storm and Warcraft III. The event brings back some of competitive gaming's most recognizable names under emcees Nick "Tasteless" Plott and Dan "Artosis" Stemkoski.
The Four Legacy Matches
StarCraft: Remastered — BoxeR vs. Nal_rA. The two met 11 times in Premier competition between 2003 and 2007, with Nal_rA winning eight. Both were inducted into the Korean Esports Hall of Fame in 2012 — BoxeR as one of the most influential esports athletes in the medium's history and Nal_rA as the dominant Protoss player of his era.
StarCraft II — IdrA vs. MC. A Wings of Liberty-era rivalry that helped define early SC2's international profile. Their MLG Columbus 2011 matches drew the kind of attention that built the game's audience outside Korea.
Heroes of the Storm — Dignitas vs. Gen.G. A tribute to the 2018 HGC Finals, which Gen.G won over Dignitas. Both squads return with rosters of BlizzCon veterans.
Warcraft III — ToD vs. TeD. Eight combined Tier 1 titles between 2005 and 2012, with TeD holding a 4-1-1 head-to-head advantage including a win at ESWC 2008. Blizzard says more Entertainment Matches will be announced before the show.
The Broader Esports Slate
The Overwatch World Cup heads into its Group Stage on August 20-23 in Busan, South Korea with the top 16 teams competing. The top eight advance to the BlizzCon finals.
World of Warcraft's AWC and MDI programs have their top six and top four teams respectively already qualified for BlizzCon 2026, where both will hold Grand Finals for a combined $600,000 USD prize pool. Hearthstone Masters Tour has eight of its 16 World Championship spots filled, with three more decided at the Summer Season from July 31 to August 2.
Why Legacy Matches Still Pull Audiences
Showmatches at BlizzCon reliably draw viewers far beyond a game's current active base. People who stopped following competitive StarCraft a decade ago tune in for BoxeR vs. Nal_rA because those names carry weight that no current player quite matches. The IdrA vs. MC pairing adds an SC2-era hook for a slightly younger audience that was introduced to competitive gaming through Wings of Liberty.
BlizzCon 2026 runs September 12-13 at the Anaheim Convention Center. A livestream will be available for those who can't attend in person.
