Science SARU isn't done with Ghost in the Shell. A new animation project based on Shirow Masamune's manga is now in production, with Science SARU handling animation again, according to an announcement on the franchise's official global site dated October 23, 2026.

That's quick. Science SARU's TV anime Ghost in the Shell (THE GHOST IN THE SHELL) only began airing and streaming in July 2026. Barely three months later, the studio has a second project from the same franchise in the works.

Announced on a flyer, not a stage

The reveal was low-key by anime standards. Instead of a convention panel or a trailer drop, the project was announced through a flyer handed out at a press preview for the OPEN HOUSE public event at Dover Street Market Ginza in Tokyo, held October 24. The preview tied in with a GEEKS RULE apparel collaboration with the TV series and included a signing by that series' director.

The flyer doubles as the project's first visual. It carries the line "New Animation Project Underway" along with the Kodansha, Bandai Namco and Science SARU logos.

What isn't confirmed yet

Nearly everything beyond the studio. The official site lists the project only under the working title Ghost in the Shell (tentative), with Shirow Masamune credited for the original manga published by Kodansha and Science SARU on animation production.

The announcement doesn't say whether this is a TV series, a film or something else. It also doesn't say whether it continues the 2026 series or stands on its own, and it names no director, cast or release window. Further updates will come through Bandai Namco Filmworks' official social channels.

A busy slate for Science SARU

The studio's own profile in the announcement shows how full its schedule already is. Dandadan Season 3 is among its 2027 projects, on top of a catalog that includes Inu-Oh, The Colors Within, Dandadan, Devilman Crybaby and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

Ghost in the Shell itself dates back to 1989, when Shirow Masamune's original manga first appeared in a Kodansha Young Magazine special edition. Since then the franchise has spanned Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film, several more anime and a Hollywood live-action film.
