hololive is getting a real TV anime, and the company waited five years to say so out loud.
Hololive Production announced the project on its official X account on September 7, confirming that animation production is being handled by Studio KAI, the studio behind Sentenced to Be a Hero. According to hololive, the anime has been in development for roughly five years, which places its origin well before the VTuber agency's current scale. Neither the title nor the story has been revealed. For now, hololive is teasing it under the abbreviation "OdeHolo," inviting fans to guess what it stands for ahead of a dedicated reveal program on September 23.
Why a VTuber company making an anime is not a small thing
hololive talents already exist as animated characters every time they stream, so on the surface a TV anime might look like a formality. It isn't. A streaming avatar is built for one performer improvising in real time. A TV anime needs a fixed script, a production schedule measured in months rather than a single broadcast, and character designs that hold up under traditional frame-by-frame animation instead of live rigging. hololive committing five years to that pipeline is a bet that its characters can carry a scripted narrative the same way they carry a stream, which is a different kind of test entirely.
The reveal also comes attached to real-world context. hololive noted that many of the scenes teased so far previously appeared in the hololive Alternative videos released in 2021 and 2022, suggesting this anime may be a continuation or full realization of that earlier project rather than something built from scratch. hololive also launched its first official smartphone game earlier this year, so an anime slots into a broader pattern of the company moving its talents into more traditional media formats rather than staying confined to livestreams.
A reveal show with actual performers
The September 23 program is set to feature hololive talents Nene Momosuzu, Polka Omaru, Lamy Yukihana, and Botan Shishiro, with Fubuki Shirakami and Mio Ookami hosting as MCs. hololive also used the same announcement to reveal a new performance unit, ASOBI★Mawaritai!, its first new unit debut in roughly two years, with further details promised through the official account.
An official account for the anime has already gone live at @odeholo. Beyond the studio and the five-year development window, hololive has not confirmed a broadcast platform, a premiere date, or whether international streaming is part of the plan, all of which will matter more than the teaser once the September 23 reveal actually happens.
