AMD spent real engineering effort backporting a flagship feature to three-year-old hardware, and the reason says more about the upscaling war with NVIDIA than the update itself. FSR 4.1 machine learning upscaling, launched exclusively on RDNA 4 with the RX 9000 Series earlier this year, is now live on Radeon RX 7000 Series cards through the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.6.2 driver released June 22.

Why this wasn't a simple toggle

RDNA 4 runs FSR 4.1's upscaling model in FP8 floating-point math. RDNA 3 hardware doesn't support that format and works in INT8 integer math instead, so AMD had to convert the entire model to run on integer operations rather than just flip a compatibility switch. AMD says the converted version holds the same visual fidelity as the RDNA 4 original, meaning RX 7000 owners aren't getting a downgraded port.

The installed base argument

RX 7000 Series cards make up the bulk of AMD's active discrete GPU base right now, which is the real reason this backport was worth the engineering time. NVIDIA's DLSS has a bigger head start in total supported titles, and developer support tends to follow wherever the largest active user base sits. Keeping RX 7000 owners current on AMD's best upscaling model is a direct play to keep that install base, and the developers who target it, from drifting toward the platform with more DLSS momentum.

The driver ships with FSR 4.1 already live across more than 300 titles, including day-one support for two of the season's bigger PC releases, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced and DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations.

Who's still waiting

RDNA 3 APU owners, meaning integrated or mobile graphics on Ryzen chips rather than discrete RX 7000 cards, aren't covered yet. AMD says the ML models for that segment are still in development. RDNA 2 (RX 6000 Series) owners are further out still, with AMD targeting early 2027.

Adrenalin Edition 26.6.2 is available now on AMD's support page. Any discrete RX 7000 Series card, desktop or laptop, can enable FSR 4.1 immediately after updating.
