Activision dropped two Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 trailers within hours of each other this week, and the pairing says something about how much story the series has piled up. One is the actual campaign trailer. The other exists purely to remind players what happened in the three games before it.

The "Narrative Recap" trailer walks through Modern Warfare (2019) to Modern Warfare III: Task Force 141's origins, General Shepherd's betrayal and downfall, and Makarov's rise as the series' main threat. It's a primer, and its existence is the tell. After three entries of rebooted lore, Activision apparently decided new and lapsed players needed a refresher before they'd follow what happens next.

What happens next, per the actual campaign trailer, is this: John Price is now operating off the grid. North Korea has launched a full-scale invasion of South Korea. Price ends up allied with a former enemy while going up against a new villain, Archer, who holds a weapon capable of overturning the global balance of power. It's the most specific plot detail Activision has confirmed since Modern Warfare 4 was announced.

Still Gated Behind a Pre-Order

Consistent with the marketing pattern this game has followed since its beta, the campaign itself isn't available to everyone at launch. Players who digitally pre-order Modern Warfare 4 on any platform get early access to the Campaign starting October 17 (AEDT), ahead of the wider release. It's the same structure the "Stranded" vignette and the Inner Circuit pre-order bonus drops used earlier this year: story content and cosmetics both funneled through the pre-order button rather than held back for a surprise at launch.

Whether that hurts the reveal is a matter of taste. Series veterans get a trailer dense enough to need its own footnotes. Everyone else gets a shorter path to catching up, as long as they're willing to commit to the purchase first.

Modern Warfare 4 launches globally on all major platforms, with Campaign access opening early for pre-order customers on October 17.
