Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is coming to a Nintendo console, and Activision is treating it like a genuine comeback rather than a routine platform announcement. The franchise last appeared on a Nintendo system in 2011 with Modern Warfare 3 on Wii. Fifteen years later, Nintendo Switch 2 gets the full multiplayer treatment, cross-play included.

The debut Switch 2 trailer landed alongside pre-orders through the Nintendo eShop and select physical retailers. Players can pre-load the Open Beta now and jump in from 29 August through 2 September, the same window running on PlayStation, Xbox and PC. It marks the first Call of Duty Open Beta the platform has ever hosted.

The build isn't an Infinity Ward port handled solo. Barcelona-based studio Digital Legends partnered directly with Infinity Ward to bring Modern Warfare 4 to Switch 2. "For the first time in more than a decade, Call of Duty is back on a Nintendo platform, and we're incredibly proud that Digital Legends has partnered with Infinity Ward to make it happen," said studio head Xavier Carrillo-Costa. That's a different setup than most earlier Switch shooter ports, which were often handed entirely to third-party porting houses with mixed results.

What the Beta Weekend Adds

Switch 2 owners get Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, gyro aiming, Pro Controller support, HDR and handheld play, on top of cross-play and cross-progression with every other platform. The beta itself grows this weekend too: Warzone Resurgence joins on the new Zodiac map, alongside the existing Multiplayer maps and modes and the campaign mission "Entrenched."

Modern Warfare 4 launches everywhere, Switch 2 included, on 23 October. For a franchise that has mostly sat out this console generation on Nintendo hardware, shipping a full-scale multiplayer shooter with cross-play intact is a bigger test of intent than a trailer can prove on its own. This beta weekend is where Activision finds out whether that promise holds up under load.
