Daken's Monster no Niku wo Kutte Itara Oui ni Tsuita Ken is getting a TV anime in 2027, and WHITE FOX, the studio behind the Re:ZERO anime, is animating it. The official site went live on October 9 with a teaser visual and the core staff.

The best part of the announcement is not on the staff list. It is the author's own account of how unlikely this was.

"Nobody rated it at all"

In his comment on the official site, Daken says this was his first serialized novel on the web fiction platform Shousetsuka ni Narou, and that it was barely read when it ran. He entered it in a contest through the site and it did not clear the first round of judging.

From there it became a published light novel, then a manga, and now an anime. Daken calls the path unheard of and says it feels like a long dream, then asks viewers to watch it casually and laugh casually.

That framing fits the premise. The title translates to roughly "I Became King by Eating Monster Meat," and the logo carries the English tagline "EAT or DIE."

A prince who eats what tries to kill him

Prince Mars lives in constant fear of assassination. His meals are poisoned, so he survives by hunting monsters in the forest outside the castle and eating their meat. One night a red-haired woman carrying a greatsword shows up and tells him he is going to be her apprentice.

From that single misunderstanding, Mars rises to become the strongest king, despite wanting no part of it. The official site pitches it as a "gluttonous hero fantasy."

Staff and books

  • Original story: Daken (GCN Bunko, Micro Magazine)
  • Original character design: Shiba
  • Animation production: WHITE FOX

Cast is listed as coming soon. Shiba and Karin Suzuragi, who draws the manga adaptation for Hakusensha's Young Animal Comics line, both sent celebration illustrations with their comments.

The timing also lines up with new books. Volume 7 of the light novel goes on sale in Japan on October 20, and volume 3 of the manga follows on October 29.

Still to come

The announcement gives only "2027" for the broadcast, with no season, network or overseas streaming partner. An official English title has not been announced either, so we are using the romanized Japanese name until one is.
