AMD Unveils New 4th Gen EPYC CPUs for Cloud Native and Technical Computing Workloads

By Ira James Jun14,2023 #Press Release

In a significant expansion of its 4th Gen EPYC CPU portfolio, AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) announced the introduction of two new processors optimized for specific workloads. Leveraging the advanced “Zen 4c” core architecture, the AMD EPYC 97X4 CPUs are tailored for cloud native computing, while the 4th Gen AMD EPYC processors with AMD 3D V-Cache technology are designed to excel in demanding technical computing applications.

At the “Data Center and AI Technology Premiere” event, AMD showcased the capabilities of these processors, with both Microsoft Azure and Meta demonstrating their support for the new AMD EPYC CPUs. This latest lineup aims to deliver superior performance, efficiency, and scalability, pushing the boundaries of what is achievable in data centers.

The cloud native computing segment, characterized by applications developed, deployed, and updated rapidly with cloud architecture in mind, is experiencing rapid growth. The AMD EPYC 97X4 processors, featuring up to 128 cores, offer an impressive 3.7x throughput performance for key cloud native workloads compared to Ampere. Furthermore, the 4th Gen AMD EPYC processors with “Zen 4c” cores deliver up to 2.7x better energy efficiency and support up to 3x more containers per server, enabling cloud native applications to scale effectively.

Meta, a participant at the event, highlighted the suitability of the 4th Gen AMD EPYC 97X4 processors for their prominent applications like Instagram and WhatsApp. They observed significant performance gains compared to the previous generation, along with substantial Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) improvements. Collaborating closely, AMD and Meta optimized the EPYC CPUs to meet Meta’s power-efficiency and compute-density requirements.

For technical computing workloads, which facilitate faster design iterations and robust simulations, the 4th Gen AMD EPYC processors with AMD 3D V-Cache technology deliver exceptional performance. These processors expand the AMD EPYC 9004 Series, offering the industry’s leading x86 CPU for computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA), electronic design automation (EDA), and structural analysis. With up to 96 “Zen 4” cores and over 1GB of L3 cache, the 4th Gen AMD EPYC processors with AMD 3D V-Cache significantly accelerate product development, achieving up to double the design jobs per day in Ansys® CFX®.

Microsoft also made an announcement during the event, confirming the general availability of Azure HBv4 and HX instances powered by 4th Gen AMD EPYC processors with AMD 3D V-Cache. These instances, optimized for high-performance computing (HPC) applications, deliver up to 5x performance gains compared to the previous generation, scaling to hundreds of thousands of CPU cores.

The entire lineup of 4th Gen AMD EPYC processors is available today, ensuring compatibility with existing AMD EPYC 9004 Series CPU-based systems. Customers can seamlessly upgrade their systems to take advantage of the enhanced capabilities.
