The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) recently honored telecom giants PLDT and its wireless subsidiary, Smart Communications Inc. (Smart), for their pivotal role in bolstering engineering education and industry-academe collaboration in the country. This recognition commemorates an almost 20-year alliance, centered around the Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP), a trailblazing industry-academe partnership initiated in 2003.

SWEEP stands as the Philippines’ first and longest-running collaboration of its kind, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world industry demands. The program has been instrumental in equipping PUP’s engineering students and faculty with cutting-edge skills and insights, aligning their curriculum with the rapid advancements in technology and innovation.

Stephanie V. Orlino, AVP and Head of Stakeholder Management Team at PLDT and Smart, highlighted the significant impact of this partnership. “Our alliance with PUP is more than a commitment; it’s a transformative journey that has enabled us to turn our shared goals into tangible actions, particularly in the realms of technology and innovation,” she stated.

The PLDT Group’s unwavering support to PUP has been a cornerstone of this enduring relationship. Arvin L. Siena, VP and Head of Technology Strategy and Transformation Office at PLDT and Smart, emphasized the mutual benefits derived from this collaboration. “This partnership has been a fertile ground for innovation, providing countless opportunities for students, faculty, and the industry at large. We eagerly anticipate the next chapter of our joint endeavors,” he said.

SWEEP’s impact is tangible and far-reaching. Over 700 students and faculty members have received specialized training through the program. Additionally, the initiative has facilitated academic exposure for more than 20 educators in PLDT and Smart field offices, provided financial support to scholars, and secured career placements for over 650 graduates within the two companies.

PUP President Manuel M. Muhi lauded the partnership’s role in enhancing the university’s engineering curriculum. “Our collaboration with PLDT and Smart has been instrumental in keeping our curriculum industry-relevant. It has substantially elevated our students’ and faculty’s competencies, enabling them to navigate the dynamic landscape of technology and innovation,” Muhi expressed.

This collaboration aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #4: Quality Education. It also resonates with the Philippine Government-mandated Private Sector Advisory Council’s vision, underscoring the PLDT Group’s commitment to promoting STEM education through inclusive learning and robust industry-academe linkages like SWEEP.
