PLDT and Smart Lead the Charge in Leveraging AI for the Philippines’ Digital Revolution

By Ira James Oct3,2023 #Press Release

PLDT and its wireless subsidiary, Smart, are championing artificial intelligence (AI) as a transformative force for the Philippines’ digital landscape. Angel Redoble, FVP and Chief Information Security Officer of both companies, envisions AI as a tool that will not only streamline operations but also enhance governance and public transparency.

According to Redoble, AI’s ability to process vast amounts of data can be instrumental in identifying irregularities that may indicate fraudulent activities. This is especially pertinent in sectors like banking, where AI algorithms can alert authorities to transactions that deviate from established patterns. “AI’s predictive capabilities, based on historical data, allow organizations to proactively address vulnerabilities by implementing preventive measures,” Redoble explained.

In the realm of public governance, Redoble sees AI as a game-changer. He believes that the technology can sift through complex data sets to make government transactions and public spending more transparent. By presenting this information in accessible formats, AI can empower citizens to hold their leaders accountable.

PLDT and Smart are already integrating AI and machine learning into their operations. They have implemented these technologies in their self-optimizing network, aligning themselves with global operators who are rapidly adopting AI. PLDT has also taken the lead in the local telecommunications industry by enhancing customer service through voice AI solutions, thereby expanding its existing customer service channels.

However, Redoble also issued a cautionary note. While AI holds immense potential for positive change, it can also be weaponized for nefarious purposes. He warned that AI systems can be programmed to conduct phishing attacks, crack passwords, and even create deep fakes. “Ultimately, the ethical use of AI boils down to human oversight. It’s crucial that those with good intentions understand and leverage this technology faster than those who aim to misuse it,” he added.

The push for AI by PLDT and Smart is part of a broader strategy aimed at elevating customer experience and operational excellence. It also aligns with the companies’ commitment to supporting the Philippine government’s nationwide digitalization initiatives. As founding members of the Presidential Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) under the Digital Infrastructure Pillar, both companies are deeply invested in the country’s digital future.

This commitment extends to global efforts as well. PLDT and Smart’s embrace of AI is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal No. 9, which focuses on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.

The companies’ proactive stance on AI signals a broader recognition of the technology’s potential to revolutionize various sectors. As the Philippines navigates its digital transformation, the role of AI is becoming increasingly central, offering both opportunities and challenges that will shape the country’s future.
