REVIEW | ASUS ROG STRIX RX 570 4GB

Following up from the wake of the Asus Arez cards that we didn’t get to see in the local GPU market, I’m glad that Asus actually decided to call it off and keep the ROG Strix branding on their AMD Radeon graphics cards. With that, let’s check what the Asus ROG Strix RX 570 has to offer.

Featuring the distinct ROG Strix design, the black GPU shroud that comes from some sort of a mash-up of a space craft and ancient alien design, this card will fit any color scheme you might have in mind for your PC. The ROG logo on the shroud is lit up and is Aura RGB Sync capable so you can have that taste of RGB lighting to complement the rest of your PC components. 

Being a much more refined version of the RX 470, the RX 570still uses the same Polaris architecture of AMD’s high-end gaming graphics cards but compared to the RX 470, the Radeon RX 570 has a 1,168MHz base and 1,244MHz boost clock, a mild increase from the Radeon RX 470’s 1,206MHz maximum clock. It’s a significant jump in base clocks, and that extra power also increased its TDP (thermal design power) from 120W to 150W. The Asus ROG Strix RX 570 however, is factory overclocked to 1310MHz on OC mode, has a decent amount of 4GB GDDR5 memory clocking at 7000MHz and a 256-bit memory bus.  

Packaging

ASUS packaged this box with a familiar ROG Strix design with an indication that you get a limited WTFast Gaming VPN subscription. And just like any ROG product, this card is Aura Sync RGB compatible. The product specifications on the back are detailed with the main features the Radeon RX 570 has to offer, including its VR capability. 

The package that we have comes with the card itself in a anti-static bag, a driver CD, a quick installation guide. 

Overview

The Asus ROG Strix RX 570 is equipped with a Direct-CU heatsink and patented Asus wing-blade fan design which is dust-resistant which provides decent thermal performanceThe card also have a feature to eliminate fan noise by literally stopping the fans when the GPU is not under load and it kept a decent temperature of 35°C-39°C. During our gaming benchmarks, the graphics card had a peak of 60°C-65°C. 

For the outputs, this card provides an HDMI port, DisplayPort, and two DVI outputs. All of these will allow you to have a maximum of five displays usng AMD’s Eyefinity technology.

Just like any other RX 5xx series of graphics cards, itt will also allow you to utilize Radeon exclusive features such as Freesync 2, Radeon Chill, bridgeless 2-way AMD Crossfire, and the entire Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition suite. 

I was personally expecting this card to have a graphics card back plate but unfortunately this card didn’t have one. Do take note that you need a single 8-pin PCIe power connection to run the card with a power supply recommendation of a minimum of 450w.

Testing Rig

For the benchmark test we wll be using our AMD Ryzen 7 2700x rig using the latest AMD Radeon driver as of this writing. 

Hardware Specs: 

CPU – Ryzen 7 2700x @ 3.7GHz 

Motherboard – MSI X470 Gaming plus 

RAM – Geil Evo X 2x8GB @ 3200Mhz DDR4 

GPU – Asus ROG Strix RX 570 4GB 

Benchmarking

We have tested this card with several games and we will show the average frame rates achieved on 1080p, High presets on all of these games. 

Conclusion

Meant as a replacement for the Radeon RX 470, the higher clock speeds and refinements given to the RX 570 is meant to close the gap between this 4GB and the Nvidia GTX 1060 3GB. Though in most cases, the GTX 1060 3GB still performs better, although it would be interesting to see how driver improvements help with performance which we will look into in a separate article. 

Given by the gaming results, this card is very capable of 1080p gaming with high settings. Even though this is the 4GB GDDR5 version, the memory headroom is well utilized by the games we tested. 

We are also impressed by the cooling system of the Asus ROG Strix RX 570 4GB because it didn’t peak above 60°C when gaming. 

Now that the crypto mining craze has been dying down and Radeon cards are slowly returning to their SRP on some markets, we are hopeful that they will once again be a viable alternative to GeForce GTX cards especially for those who are on a budget as the Radeon cards are originally the budget alternative for PC builders. But, even then, the Asus ROG Strix RX 570 4GB will not disappoint for those Radeon fans who wants to get into 1080p gaming on Triple A game titles.
