We had a chance to check out the AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT on its launch day, and the first batch of cards needed a BIOS flash for them to have an increase in performance through higher memory clocks.
This recently launched AMD graphics card proved to be powerful harnessing the AMD RDNA gaming architecture to deliver the ultimate 1080p gaming experiences with blazing framerates and incredible visuals.
We have the RX 5600 XT cards available in the market right now, providing 14 Gbps memory speeds that deliver increased performance over the previous 12 Gbps model with a GPU BIOS update. To experience the class-leading 1080p performance of the RX 5600 XT, we will look at the MSI RX 5600 XT Gaming X in this review.

Looking at the specifications above, you can see that the MSI RX 5600 XT Gaming X is significantly more appealing on paper thanks to it’s higher clock speeds and memory speeds than the AMD Reference XT 5600 XT. We will be comparing it with a bunch of other cards, later on, to see how much of a performance boost in raw frame rates does the 14Gbps give, but for now, let’s take a closer look at the graphics card itself.
What’s in the box?
In the usual MSI fashion, the box art will show you what to expect when it comes to the aesthetic of the GPU itself, as well as a lot of information on the back regarding its product features, specifications, and cooling system. Unboxed, you will find the graphics card itself, and the usual thank you card, quick installation guide, and product brochure.
A closer look
Upon first look at the card, you will see the beefy cooling solution: a chunky heatsink with MSI patented Torx fan 3.0 with double ball bearing design to ensure maximum performance.
On the back, you have a beautiful brushed metal back-plate etched with the MSI dragon logo giving it a clean and industrial feel. There are no fancy RGB lighting here, though unlike other graphics cards out there. We like this kind of aesthetic as it isn’t too messy on the eyes.
Looking at the card on the side, you will find two 8-pin PCI-e power connections and the MSI branding, which is the only RGB lighting you will find on this graphics card and is controllable by the MSI Mystic Light RGB software integrated into the MSI Dragon Center.
Looking at the outputs, you have a generous amount of DisplayPort outputs and a single HDMI port. From here, you can also see that the card can take up at least two and a quarter PCI-e expansion slots.
Graphics Card Testing
We put this graphics card to the test using our Ryzen system and compared our results with different graphics cards. Our system configuration is as follows:

Being a graphics card design for 1080p gaming, we decided to purely go with that resolution for a more consistent benchmarking data. We lined up a mix of AAA and esports titles in the benchmark data, and we also used DirectX 12 API on all games when available for consistency.
Gaming Benchmark results
As you can see in the gaming benchmarks results, the MSI RX 5600XT Gaming X stayed consistent with the results of a BIOS flashed Sapphire RX 5600XT, but keeping the lead in some of the games thanks to it’s higher GPU core frequencies. It also stayed almost head to head against its NVIDIA counterpart, the MSI RTX 2060 Gaming Z, but with the Radeon GPU keeping lead in most of the games we tested.
Tested in our open-case test bench
Using our open-case test system and FurMark torture test, you can see that the Radeon graphics card still falls short when left in stock settings. Though the temperature results here are within acceptable levels, please give this card a few tweaks on its fan curve setting, and this should be a non-issue. Thanks to MSI’s Torx Fan 3.0 design, the graphics card relatively stayed quiet while keeping the temperatures under control.
Final thoughts and recommendations
We have to give kudos to AMD for releasing a mid-range graphics card that can relatively compete against its NVIDIA counterparts in raw performance in gaming. Should you consider picking up a Radeon RX 5600 XT for 1080p gaming? Absolutely! The value proposition here is reasonably balanced, given that you are aiming for raw FPS performance in games.
To add on to that, gamers who purchase a AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT graphics card or select Radeon RX 5600 Series-powered desktop PCs will receive Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Master Edition and Resident Evil 3.
Gamers can also enjoy a broad array of Radeon exclusive features:
- Radeon Image Sharpening to increase clarity of in-game visuals,
- Radeon Anti-lag to help minimize the amount of time between a gamer pressing a key or moving a mouse, and the response showing up on the screen,
- Finally, Radeon Boost to dynamically lower the resolution of the entire frame to allow for higher FPS with little perceived impact on quality.
The only caveat in picking this Radeon Navi graphics card over an RTX 2060 is that you won’t have access to the NVIDIA Turing Hardware Encoder, NVENC, just in-case you need that extra feature for streaming with OBS or XSplit broadcaster. Though the AMD VEC is not that bad, NVIDIA has the upper hand if game streamers are looking for a smooth game streaming experience.
So for the MSI RX 5600 XT Gaming, it has a clean design with some not too obnoxious red accents, a beefy cooling solution that can be very effective with the proper fan curve setting, and higher clock speeds for that high-FPS 1080p gaming. It has been one of the better RX 5600 XT models we’ve seen in the market right now, and it’s pretty exciting to know that they are in the Philippine market, and can be refreshed with 14Gbps memory for that extra performance.
