Arena of Valor to make historic debut at SEA Games 2019, the first time esports will be a medal event

SINGAPORE, 6 December, 2019 – Arena of Valor (AoV), one of Southeast Asia’s most popular Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games, will make SEA Games history this weekend by debuting as a medal sport – marking the first time competitive gaming will be contested as a medal event at a multi-sport competition sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee.

AoV’s selection as a medal sport builds on its including into the 2018 Asian Games, where it was featured as part of an esports demonstration event. Its official inclusion as a medal event for SEA Games 2019 highlights the growth of esports as a mainstream sport in Southeast Asia and the emergence of the region as the fastest-growing mobile games market in the world, according to Newzoo.

The event will see 8 AoV teams – representing Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Laos PDR, Myanmar, and Malaysia – vie for the gold medal. It will run from 7 to 9 December at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan, Manila, with the group stages adopting a best-of-two rounds format, the bracket qualifiers adopting a best-of-three rounds format, and the finals following a best-of-five rounds format.

The games will be live streamed across Southeast Asia on Youtube, Facebook, Garena LIVE, and Valor TV, with live commentary in 4 languages – Thai, Vietnamese, Mandarin, and Indonesian – to better engage viewers in their local language.

Singapore will be represented by Resurgence, who comprises Renfred “Elespresso” Ng, 29; Dabbie “813” Lim, 28; Chris “Yueyah” Ong, 28; Bjorn “Zeys” Ong, 25; and Marcus “Marclaren” Lee, 24. Resurgence won their right to represent the nation after winning the AoV national selection tournament in May.

“Representing the country is a huge honor for each one of us,” said Jacky Ng, Manager of Resurgence. “We will do our best to bring a medal back to Singapore.”
